Overview
The Southwest Behavioral & Health Services Training Institute’s Doctoral Internship in Psychology Program is committed to developing well-rounded psychologists who have an interest in delivering strength’s based services in a public behavioral health setting. On-site experience is balanced by weekly colloquia, as well as individual and group supervision that provide an excellent venue for learning and professional development. These weekly meetings provide an opportunity for Doctoral Psychology Interns to discuss research, evaluate evidence-based treatment, analyze how a client directed-outcome informed approach directs treatment, participate in case discussions, and meet with psychologists from the community to learn about their areas of specialty. Collectively these activities provide the Doctoral Psychology Interns opportunities for meaningful exchange of ideas on topics of relevance for psychologists and deepen their understanding of psychology as a profession. The Southwest Behavioral & Health Doctoral Psychology Internship Program is a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) and is accredited by the American Psychological Association.
Practitioner-Scholar Philosophy
Southwest Behavioral & Health Services Psychology Internship program espouses the philosophy of the Practitioner-Scholar model of training which grew out of the conference on Professional Training in Psychology held in Vail, CO in 1973. The program seeks to continue the clinical training the Doctoral Psychology Intern began through previous field placements and practicum experiences.
Internship Program
The Doctoral Psychology Internship positions are filled each year through the APPIC Match. (http://appic.org) Doctoral Psychology Interns earn 2000 hours over the course of 12 months. The program starts in September of each year. The stipend is $35,000 for the year and Interns are eligible for benefits such as health, dental, and vision insurance, and paid vacation time as well as paid Federal and State holidays.
Currently, Southwest Behavioral & Health Services offers several Doctoral Internship positions in a variety of settings, depending on the placement. One such setting is in an outpatient methadone clinic which offers opioid replacement services to adult clients. SB&H also offers internship positions in the Residential/Community Living Program in which the Doctoral Psychology Interns provide group and individual therapy, as well as community integration for adults. SB&H also offers placements in the Outpatient Program in which the Psychology Intern provides a range of therapeutic services to adults, children, and families, including individual and group therapy, case management, and crisis intervention.
Core Competencies
The Doctoral Psychology Interns receive a wide range of training experiences during the course of their internship year. Through supervision, colloquia, and on-site experiences, Doctoral Psychology Interns have ample opportunities to gain competencies required by professional psychologists including professionalism, ethics, cultural diversity, relational skills, research and science, clinical skills, and training/supervision.
Supervision
Doctoral Psychology Interns receive two hours of individual supervision and group supervision each week with a licensed psychologist, as well as weekly didactic training.
